Constructivism is a theory of learning which posits that students learn by actively constructing their own knowledge. Concepts cannot simply be transferred from teachers to students – they have to be conceived. Learning is a process of active construction does not involve passive acquisition. Under constructivist theory learners would use available building blocks to construct knowledge.

Constructivism is backgrounded by cognitive and social subvariants which are not mutually exclusive, they underpinned the theory in question. Cognition and cultural influences are entwined and involved in the process of learning. Constructivism rethinks education practice. Communication activities and ideas change welcome dialogues, role-plays, games, debates, true-false questions, short answers and discussions.

Thus, students need to reflect on what they are learning. Knowledge becomes part of the learner, and the learner emerges empowered. Learner-centered support, task-based curriculum encourage knowledge construction. Spontaneous interactions on students’ part are attempted in class. The constructivist approach facilitates language learning and translation procedures into that. Students are encouraged freely to experiments. Interaction of a teacher- learner and learner-learner serve a variety of functions: cooperation in performing the task, exchange of ideas, feedback, clarification and evaluation.

There are great benefits of using translation for assessing reading comprehension. Translation offers many opportunities to emphasize details and main ideas of a translated text, which improves comprehension of the original text (language style and pragmatics are of no exception either).

Thus, by constructivism students have opportunity for individual choice, autonomy, multiple pathways, and expansion of topic and background information.
